'What are you Learning?'

This question popped up early in the year, and it really stuck with me. Partly because learning and studying are big parts of a portfolio career, and also because it's just such a great question!
I'm pretty sure that specific learning will become a focus in one of my six-week blocks. I've been brainstorming something formal for this year, but I'm not quite there yet.
So, this post is about how learning shows up in different ways and what I've noticed since I got asked this question.
Exploring Languages
I met a new friend who insisted on switching to the local language of the country we were in. They are from Mexico, and their first language is Spanish, but they're also fluent in English. I really appreciated this as it challenged me. For the really important stuff, we switched back to English because I didn't want to miss anything crucial.
I spent some time in a Northern Indian metropolis where "Hing-lish" is pretty much the main language now. I really valued the moments when I got to hear pure Hindi, though I think my 'Hinglish' is pretty good!
In both cases, I'm talking about conversations in homes and communities, not the touristy spots. I don't think I'll be jumping on Duolingo anytime soon, but I might be more intentional on future trips.
That One Extra Sporting Activity...
I've got a list, and I might be ready to commit to something new. I have a feeling that by the time I get to my dedicated learning block, this new activity will find me rather than the other way around.

Here's what's on the list:
Padel - there's an organisation needed here, I feel, which could be a blocker.
Golf - so far, I've hit the driving range socially once this year.
More intense and frequent hikes.
Swimming (more regularly).
Or maybe a martial art...
I can't wait to see where this goes by the end of 2026!
The Importance of Environment
Then there’s the less tangible stuff. On a recent day out with my nephew, who I took on a tour of Wembley Stadium, it was inevitable that what we consumed would be different for each of our lenses. For example, I was most taken with the importance of environment regarding preparation, whether before a concert or sports match. I also noticed what happens during the intervals and the setup of the coaches' rooms. The importance of environment translates into daily life as well, and I feel it most in my capacity as a facilitator.
Learning Through Experience
Learning isn't always about formal education or structured classes. Sometimes, it’s about the experiences we gather along the way. Each interaction, each new activity, and each moment spent in a different environment contributes to our growth.
I might need to check back with the person who asked the question to confirm what I said back then. I have a feeling sports might have been part of it, along with the area I'd like to explore more formally. As I write this, maybe the formal is calling me organically as well.
Embracing New Opportunities
As I reflect on my journey, I realise that embracing new opportunities is crucial. Whether it's picking up a new sport, learning a language, or simply exploring a new environment, each experience adds to my portfolio career.
So, what’s next for me? I’m excited to dive into these new activities and see where they lead. Who knows? I might discover a hidden talent or passion along the way!
In conclusion, learning is a lifelong journey. It’s about being open to new experiences and allowing them to shape us. Whether through languages, sports, or the environments we find ourselves in, every moment is a chance to grow. So, let’s embrace it!
