The 4-hour work day when travelling...

If we can agree that 5 hours is the optimum number of work hours in a day, is it sensible and safe to assume that this can be reduced further to 4 hours if you're in a different time zone to normal, you have a few quiet hours in the day before everything else gets started and you're clear on your goals/output for the day?

Is 4 hours enough 'work' for one day when you are a travelling portfolio person?

On a recent trip to California, I managed to buckle down and focus on work for 4 hours most days.

This was mainly down to:

  • A favourable time difference - I was up around 6am most days naturally and knew most of the mornings were mine

  • Having quiet focused time

  • Being clear on my objectives for the day/week ahead - along with an overall 6-week and 12-week plan with my accountability partners

Gone are the days when true portfolio people take traditional holidays/vacations. Although we should outsource what we can and systemise what we want, there are some things we will always want to do and our choice of work will need us for.

Thoughts welcome!
