View from the terrace of one of the main hubs in town. Not my main office location
This is the second in a series of posts having returned to an office environment after over a decade. One of my very first mentors commented on the last post citing that remote wins all the way, however this comes with a huge BUT - that being how disciplined one is. I agree, BUT, I think the reality is layered and actually you need discipline in all instances.
Here are some of my reflections after Week 2 -
Discipline
If you're working remotely and new to it, you may find it hard to manage your time, diary and yourself. For me, I think discipline also means saying 'no' to stuff. It's as much about the discipline to take breaks, STOP working and actually take your holidays.
I'm reflecting on some conversations I've been having lately with young people in their 20s that are at the start of their careers. Too often am I hearing that they've missed something outside of work because of work. Discipline starts right there. What time is work supposed to finish? If you're the boss, why aren't you telling your employee to stop working so that they don't burn out?
Takeaway - Boundaries. They are needed. Some people are better at putting these in than others. Take a moment to reflect as this will be a running theme.
I've had dinner with my family EVERY evening this week
It's possible that having my brother in town has been a contributing factor. There has also been a different mix of who I've had dinner with. From just my brother and I, to all of of us, to having one of my cousin's over. Apart from the odd food pic, it's been tech free also!
Takeaway - Consider how your home environment is impacted with a career change. A routine can help us compartmentalise and have quality time with people (even if it is for a short time period)
Caffeine consumption
In week one, a non-coffee drinker told me that the coffee machine was broken which by the end of the week turned out to be untrue AND the same co-worker had showed me another one downstairs.
All said and done, over the last two weeks, I've spent far too much on coffee and tea although I think my overall consumption has actually reduced since being in an office.
Getting to know people and leaving to go across to Starbucks for a break has probably contributed to this - from a finance perspective, this is something that I am going to monitor in the next month or so.
And an update on weight...
As an average, I've definitely shed a couple of Ibs!
I'll definitely be monitoring this properly in the coming months - in particular morning starting weight. I've had a couple of 'heavy' days this week which I'll attribute to a couple of nights out.
Is it time to challenge the notion that being behind a desk means you pile on weight?
Takeaway - Having a routine, can help identify areas that you can better keep track of
This week, I've had 4 days of a 'routine' - particularly on a morning. It will still take a while, but I'm getting used to it. The main challenge will be as it gets colder and darker.
The 5th day, I was able to retain a prior commitment in my portfolio and have managed to sharpen the saw by refreshing some training.
The week ahead sees my first full 5 days coming up....wish me luck!
