The end of the world as we know it... or is it?

Picture
Impending change is upon us, or is it? You may have been receiving numerous emails from all sorts of people over the last fortnight. More so than usual. All because of what many perceive to be the end of the world - 25th May 2018. You know what I'm talking about? The emails that tell you that this change is happening, and then another automated one to say that you will miss out if you don't take action.

I think I can count on one hand how many times I have taken action here and I can't help but wonder whether from 28th May I'll be receiving a noticeable amount less emails. It feels somewhat liberating. I wonder also if the people urging us to take action will actually take action on their end and remove us from said mailing lists.

I met up with two of my esteemed network buddies last week, Jay Blake and Anna Wilkinson, both of whom I consider to be well versed in GDPR and communication (neither of whom try to position themselves as experts, they have become experts) One of the sad things we discussed about all of this is that people we deem to be friends or close business associates have relegated us to said lists asking if we would like to remain connected. Firstly, a truely established relationship shouldn't need this and more importantly have we got so lazy that we have stopped the personalised emails and calls?

Those of you who are familiar with our blog will have noticed that we haven't posted any fresh content for a while. Those of you who were on our mailing list will have not received an email from us in 2018.  There are a number of reasons for both and take this as a sign that we will be resuming the former. The main reason for some such silence in communication comes down to the fact that there was always people behind the content and delivery that we produced and sadly they may have other priorities in their portfolios in the last few months.

Has the clogging up of inboxes with random 'junk mail' meant that the response to a personalised email that you didn't quite get round to got delayed and forgotten about. Guilty as charged. Perhaps this is a chance for all of us to 'start again'. Get rid of the dead database and form actual relationships. I for one look forward to GDPR (Growing Deeper Personal Relationships) in my portfolio and commit to sharing more of the content that we have already created and re-connecting and re-establishing relationships that are dear to us.

'Growing Deeper Personal Relationships', (GDPR) is term coined by a man named Angus Grady - a term I came to know about through Jay Blake.

As we have some quiet time this Bank Holiday weekend, perhaps ponder who are YOU going to reconnect with?
